What is Copywriting?
Copywriting refers to the use of written communication in business. If you have ever written a mailshot, advert, or the text for your website, that was copywriting, and so the truth is, that makes you a copywriter.
The difference between a copywriter and a good copywriter is… a big waste of money! Let me explain.
Whilst you may be a copywriter in the strict sense of the work, it definitely doesn’t make you a good copywriter… and the difference between the two can be lost profits.
You may have a beautiful brochure, a classy looking website, or a large advert in a well circulated newspaper. All too often businesses invest large sums of money in the vehicle that conveys their message, but very little thought goes into the message itself – and can be big money down the drain.
Chances are, if you write the copy yourself, the message is boring and weak. If your message is weak, people will lose interest, turn the page, click the mouse.
On the other hand, good copy, will grab the prospects attention, pull them in a little closer and hold their interest while you subtly bring them around to your way of thinking. Then when they realise how your product or service will greatly enhance their lives, bringing them more happiness, more comfort, more prosperity or whatever else it will do for them, your copy will help them understand why the most important thing they can do right now is to pick up the phone, fill in the form, or take some action.
So many websites, adverts and letters I see today, have clearly had little thought go into the message they are delivering. It doesn’t matter if you have the best product in the world, if your sales message is poor you won’t sell many. On the other hand, a decent product accompanied by an awesome message will sell by the shed load.
Can you see why it’s so important to put sufficient time, energy and thought into the sales message you convey? And why neglecting your copy is akin to leaving a stack of notes on the table and walking away.
Good copywriting can be the difference between surviving and thriving. I hope you can now see why businesses employ a professional copywriting service.
